I've frequented a number of wonderful Thai cuisine restaurants in southern Alberta and the Thai Orchid Room in Medicine Hat definitely comes out on top. I made reservations for 7pm on a Wednesday evening. The restaurant was one-third full and on a Friday or weekend looked to be a busy venue. Interior is well-kept and conservatively decorated with authentic sashes on the employees. Server was prompt and courteous, took our drink orders of the traditional Thai iced tea, which was smooth and creamy heaven. The starter of Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam), spice level: Authentic (3-1/2 peppers) and was perfect. Presentation was perfect, salad was cool and spicy, shredded green papaya paired with a side order of sticky rice for us to share. The heat was very present, but not overwhelming and quickly cooled with a sip of iced tea. For the main course Tiger Prawns in Green Curry (Gaeng Kiaw Wan Goong) and traditional Pad Thai was generous enough for two. Both dishes ordered spice level: Hot (1-1/2 peppers). Jasmine rice was served on the side. Pad Thai was a little light on meat ingredients, but the flavour was perfect and presentation was spot on dressed with shredded egg and bean sprouts. If you like green curry, the prawns we perfectly cooked and served in a mixture of fresh vegetables and I would highly recommend this dish. Dessert consisted of Coconut Crème Brûlée for myself and Mango Berry Cheesecake for my date. Both tasted wonderful although they admit they do not make the cheesecake themselves, the Crème Brûlée was to die for; perfectly set and the caramelized sugar was exquisite. Price was what I came to expect for a fine dining night out ($80 for 2 of us) and worth every penny. I’m excited to return and try the Chicken Coconut Milk Soup (Tom Kha Gai) and even just stop and sip another Thai Iced Tea. Who knew you could escape the steakhouse in the Gas City!

Came across a great article on Wise Bread...

Eleven Tips to save money during tight times (or everyday)

  1. Avoid the sales UNLESS you have a specific item in mind that you need
  2. Take a shopping list
  3. Never shop when hungry
  4. Buy store brand
  5. Use your library
  6. Limit eating out
  7. Buy second hand
  8. Shop at outlet stores
  9. Save gas, combine trips
  10. Bring a lunch
  11. Pay bills on time.

Heather and I try to practice most of these fairly often. The shopping list has saved us a ton at the grocery store (we can be a bit compulsive). Not eating out as often is another great one. I am a "Regretful Diner" after we drop $60 on a meal I could have made better for $10. Buying second hand is also right up there with both of us checking out the garage sales on Saturdays. Up until recently, I never thought of the added interest/late fee they tack onto your cable or electric bill for being a day late ($1-5 adds up pretty quickly each month).

Yay! Tar sandcastles...

Explore Alberta's Latest Tourist Attraction: The Tar Sands Resort

On a serious note, why aren't more Albertan's outraged with the environmental disaster our province is hosting? From a global perspective, the Tar Sands is the most destructive project on earth! Are we that short sighted and money hungry that we'd sell our own children's futures so thoughlessly? Those massive 12000 acre tailing ponds won't disappear anytime soon. I'm sure we will see the fallout of those suspended hydrocarbon time bombs causing skyrocketting cancer rates from ground water contamination. Wake up Alberta, stop shitting in your own backyard!
